14 What is SkillsUSA? SkillsUSA is a career and technical student organization that connects students, educators, and industry to strengthen America’s skilled workforce. Through chapter experiences, leadership development, career exploration, competitions, and industry connections, members have opportunities to apply what they are learning while developing the skills needed for future success. SkillsUSA Massachusetts serves middle school, high school, and college/postsecondary members across the Commonwealth. Throughout the year, students can participate in local chapter activities, conferences, competitive events, community engagement, career- focused programs, and recognition opportunities. While competitions are one highly visible part of SkillsUSA, the organization extends far beyond competition. The SkillsUSA experience is designed to support students throughout their career journey—helping them discover their strengths, practice leadership, build professional connections, and become more confident in the skills they bring to the workplace. At the foundation of that experience are two key tools: the SkillsUSA Framework and the Program of Work. Together, they help chapters turn SkillsUSA’s mission into meaningful experiences throughout the school year. The SkillsUSA Framework The SkillsUSA Framework defines the skills every member can develop through participation in SkillsUSA. It provides a common language for career readiness and helps connect what students learn in the classroom with the experiences they have through their chapter, workplace, and community. The Framework is organized into three components and 17 Essential Elements. Together, these elements identify the personal, professional, and technical skills students need to succeed in the workplace and beyond. PERSONAL SKILLS The attitudes, values, and behaviors that support personal and professional growth. • Integrity • Work Ethic • Professionalism • Responsibility • Adaptability/Flexibility • Self-Motivation WORKPLACE SKILLS The skills members use to communicate, collaborate, lead, and contribute effectively in professional environments. • Communication • Decision Making • Teamwork • Multicultural Sensitivity and Awareness • Planning, Organizing and Management • Leadership TECHNICAL SKILLS GROUNDED IN ACADEMICS The knowledge and abilities students use to perform their work safely, effectively, and professionally within their chosen career field. • Computer and Technology Literacy • Job-Specific Skills • Safety and Health • Service Orientation • Professional Development 17 Essential Elements Together, these skills build career readiness, confidence, adaptability, and success.
